Synqro thumbnail: what a Webflow developer does, from building the site to technical SEO

A Webflow developer is a specialized web developer who turns a mockup, often designed in Figma, into a working Webflow site: clean structure and classes, CMS, interactions, responsive layouts, technical SEO and integrations. They work in Webflow's visual editor but master the fundamentals of the web (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) to deliver a site that is fast and easy to evolve.

This guide covers what they do, the skills to check, the official certifications, how to choose between a freelancer and an agency, and the questions to ask before handing over your site.

What is a Webflow developer?

A Webflow developer builds the site in Webflow from an approved mockup. They do not necessarily design the interface, which is the web designer's job, and they do not hand-write every line of code like a traditional front-end developer. Webflow generates the HTML and CSS from their choices, which requires thinking exactly as you would in CSS: boxes, flexbox, grid, classes, inheritance.

You recognize a good Webflow developer less by how beautiful the delivered site is than by what happens six months later: the client's team publishes on its own, new pages do not break the layout, and the site stays fast. It is also the right test when choosing between a Webflow freelancer and an agency.

What a Webflow developer does

  • Build the mockup: reproduce the design faithfully, often from Figma (see our article on the Figma to Webflow plugin).
  • Set up a consistent system of classes and variables, for example with the Client-First method, so the site stays maintainable.
  • Design the CMS architecture: collections, fields, references between content, dedicated SEO fields.
  • Create interactions and animations with Webflow's native tools or the GSAP library, without hurting performance.
  • Ensure responsiveness and accessibility: breakpoints, font sizes, contrast, keyboard navigation, alt text.
  • Handle technical SEO: title and meta tags, heading hierarchy, 301 redirects, sitemap, structured data.
  • Connect tools: CRM, forms, analytics, automations, custom code and APIs.
  • Migrate an existing site, for example a WordPress to Webflow migration, without losing rankings.
  • Train the client's team to edit content.

The skills to check

SkillWhy it mattersHow to check it
CSS (flexbox, grid, units)A poorly structured site breaks with every new pageAsk them to open a project and explain its structure
Class naming conventionDetermines whether other people can maintain the siteLook at the Style panel of a delivered site
CMS architectureAvoids rebuilding collections as content growsHave them describe the data model of a past project
PerformanceAffects the experience and Core Web VitalsTest a delivered site in PageSpeed Insights
Technical SEOA poorly executed redesign can cost rankingsAsk for their method for redirects and QA
JavaScript and APIsNeeded as soon as there are integrationsAsk for an example of an integration they built
AccessibilityUsability for everyone, and legal requirements in some casesCheck keyboard navigation and contrast on a delivered site

Official Webflow certifications

Webflow University offers two individual certification exams, described on its exams page:

  • Webflow Practitioner: validates command of the core features.
  • Webflow Visual Developer: aimed at experienced users.

Each exam has 50 multiple-choice questions and the certificate is valid for two years. It is a good baseline signal, not a guarantee of quality: nothing replaces reviewing a delivered site. On the agency side, Webflow also certifies its partners; Synqro is a Webflow Premium Partner.

Freelancer, agency or in-house hire: which should you choose?

OptionBest forStrengthsWatch out for
Freelance developerBuilding an existing mockup, small updatesFlexibility, a single point of contactAvailability, continuity if they are away, design and SEO often out of scope
Specialized agencyA complete site: strategy, brand, design, development, SEOMultidisciplinary team, processes, continuityHigher budget, check who actually works on the project
In-house hireA company that updates its site every weekResponsiveness, product knowledgeFixed cost, technical isolation, need for complementary profiles

How much does a project with a Webflow developer cost?

The cost depends first on scope: number of page templates, CMS complexity, animations, integrations, migration and content to produce. At Synqro, a complete site costs €3,000 to €20,000 excl. VAT depending on the design, the branding work and SEO. You also need to add the Webflow subscription: $15 per month for the Basic plan and $25 per month for the Premium plan with CMS, billed yearly according to the October 2026 pricing page. Ballpark figures by type of provider are covered in our article on the cost of a Webflow website.

Questions to ask before you sign

  1. Can you show me two delivered sites and give me read access to a project?
  2. Which class convention do you use, and who will be able to take over the site after you?
  3. How do you handle redirects and SEO during a redesign?
  4. Who writes the content, and based on what information?
  5. Is training my team to edit the site included?
  6. Who owns the site and the Webflow account at the end of the project?
  7. What happens after launch: maintenance, updates, response times?

How our Webflow developers work at Synqro

At Synqro, Webflow development is done by our production team in France, once the design is approved. Before the build, we gather the client's real material (brochures, figures, concrete cases) so that the structure of the pages and the CMS fits the content, not the other way around. At delivery, we train the team to edit the site so they can publish without us.

A complete site is delivered in 8 to 12 weeks, a landing page in 2 weeks. We have supported more than 150 companies since 2019, including Qobra, Sleeq, Cashbee and Morning. For a project, explore our Webflow website design services.
