An SEO consultant is an organic search specialist who analyzes a site, sets a strategy and runs the actions (technical, content, links) needed to gain rankings and qualified traffic on Google, without paid advertising. They can be a freelancer, an employee or part of a team.
The job has evolved: it now also covers visibility in AI-generated answers, such as AI Overviews or ChatGPT. Google itself lists optimization for generative AI among the services an SEO can offer.
This guide covers their tasks, skills, pricing models and the questions to ask before you sign.

What is an SEO consultant?

An SEO consultant is the expert who improves a site's visibility in the organic results of search engines. They diagnose what is holding it back, decide what to fix first, then track the effect of each action in the data. If you are new to the topic, start with our complete definition of SEO.
The title is not protected. It covers very different profiles: technical specialist, content strategist, link building specialist or generalist. That is why you should check what the person actually does before comparing prices.
In its "Do you need an SEO?" page on Google Search Central (updated in June 2026), Google lists the services an SEO commonly offers: review of the site's content and structure, technical advice (hosting, redirects, error pages, JavaScript), content development, keyword research, training, expertise in a specific market or region, and optimization for generative AI.
What an SEO consultant does

1. Audit the site
The audit sets the diagnosis: indexing, crawling, performance, structure, content, links. It ends with a list of actions ranked by impact and effort, not with an 80-page report nobody reads. Our technical SEO audit checklist details the points we check.
2. Define the strategy
Keyword research, analysis of the competitors that rank, choice of the pages to create or strengthen. A good strategy starts from the business: which queries bring in customers, not just volume.
3. Optimize pages and content
Title tags and meta descriptions, heading structure, internal links, direct answers to searchers' questions, structured data. The consultant writes the content or briefs writers.
4. Fix the technical side
Speed and Core Web Vitals, unindexed pages, redirects, duplication, mobile version. They usually work with the site's developer, who applies the fixes.
5. Build authority
Earn links and mentions from relevant sites (link building), within Google's rules. Brand mentions also matter for being cited by AI assistants.
6. Measure and adjust
Search Console, Google Analytics, rank tracking: the consultant reads the SEO metrics that matter (impressions, clicks, pages gaining ground, conversions) and adjusts the plan. Since the arrival of AI Overviews and AI Mode, they also track the brand's presence in generated answers.
7. Prepare the site for AI search engines
According to Google's documentation on AI features in Search, there is no additional technical requirement to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet can be cited. The work is therefore to make content clear, sourced and easy to cite. That is the subject of GEO (Generative Engine Optimization).
The skills of a good SEO consultant

- Web technology: HTML, crawling and indexing, JavaScript rendering, redirects, performance.
- Data analysis: Search Console, GA4, exports, spreadsheets. Being able to tell a real trend from a seasonal swing.
- Writing and marketing: understanding search intent, building a page that answers it and converts.
- Tools: a crawler (Screaming Frog or equivalent), a keyword and backlink tool (Ahrefs, Semrush), an AI visibility tracker.
- Teaching and project management: explaining choices, prioritizing, keeping developers and writers moving.
How do you become an SEO consultant?

No degree is required. Most consultants come from digital marketing, web development or writing. What counts: having worked on real sites, measured results, and keeping up with Google's official documentation. To choose a path, see our comparison of the best SEO training courses (CPF, France's personal training account, prices, content).
How much does an SEO consultant cost?
There is no official rate card. The price depends on the scope, the size of the site, the level of experience and what is included (advice only, or production of content and links as well). The ranges are detailed in our guide to SEO service pricing. The billing models, on the other hand, are standard:
| Model | How it works | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-price audit | Diagnosis and action plan delivered once | A site that has plateaued, or before a redesign |
| Day rate | Days billed according to time spent | One-off need, extra support for an in-house team |
| Monthly retainer | Recurring fee: strategy, content, monitoring | Growth goal over 6 to 12 months |
| Coaching | Sessions to train the team that executes | Companies that want to bring SEO in-house |
For a concrete benchmark: at Synqro, SEO support costs from €1,000 to €5,000 excluding VAT per month, depending on the volume of content and the level of execution included. If your team can execute on its own, SEO coaching is often the most cost-effective option.
Be wary of very cheap offers that promise quick results: SEO takes production time, and time has a cost.
Freelance SEO consultant, in-house team or agency: which to choose?
| Criterion | Freelance consultant | In-house SEO | Agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Point of contact | A single person | A dedicated employee | A project manager and specialists |
| Skills covered | Depends on the profile | Depends on the profile | Technical, content, links, design, development |
| Production capacity | Limited by their time | Limited by the team | Higher |
| Continuity (vacation, departure) | Fragile | Depends on hiring | Covered by the team |
| Good choice if | Targeted need, tight budget | SEO is a central, permanent channel | Several workstreams to run in parallel |
The real question is not the status but the execution. Excellent advice with nobody to put it into practice produces nothing. If your site needs deep changes (structure, design, development), a team that can also build the site saves time.
How to choose an SEO consultant: the questions to ask

Google recommends asking these questions before hiring an SEO:
- Can you show me examples of your work and results?
- Do you follow the Google Search Essentials?
- What results do you expect, in what timeframe, and how do you measure them?
- What experience do you have in my industry and my market?
- How will we communicate, and will you explain every change to me?
Warning signs, again according to Google:
- a guaranteed number one ranking ("no one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google");
- a claimed special relationship with Google, which never accepts money to rank a site;
- unsolicited email outreach;
- vagueness about methods, or artificial link schemes;
- a request for write access to Search Console at the audit stage: read access is enough at that point.
How we work at Synqro

At Synqro, we start every SEO and GEO engagement by collecting the client's real data: sales brochures, figures, concrete cases. That is what prevents generic content that neither Google nor AI assistants have any reason to surface. After that, a quarterly review lets us reprioritize based on what the data shows.
Documented result for our client Qobra: leads multiplied by 3 and organic traffic multiplied by 16. If you want to know what this approach would do for your site, discover our SEO and GEO support.
